Combining a naked man, a famous image of a flying owl, and an image of palm tree leaves, Icarus denotes the loneliness and helplessness of mankind at the face of the challenges that life presents. While the man's nakedness enforces his loneliness, the leaves of the palm tree, here used as foreground, denotes the bars of a natural cage. Although Icarus appears to still have his wings made of wax, his tragic fate and ultimate fall is foreshadowed with the grayness of the entire image.
